Teeth grinding – the jaw as a stress valve
Either the dentist tells you, the first tooth corners are already broken out or you notice it yourself in the morning when the jaw is completely tense: during the night it went right again. The good news is: there are sustainable solutions, which we would like to present to you.
What exactly is bruxism?
Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a mechanical misloading of the teeth due to unconscious movements at night and/or during the day. The consequences of this can be very stressful. Dental damage, sleep disorders, tension, headaches are just some of them. Not to mention the displeasure of the people who are kept awake at night by the crunch. In this blog article, we’ll get to the bottom of the causes and tell you what can help against teeth grinding.
- Causes of bruxism
- The jaw as a stress valve
- Treat bruxism – fight symptoms or solve cause
- Solve causes and learn relaxation with hypnosis
Causes of bruxism
It should first be clarified by a dentist whether there are any obvious problems with the bite together. Teeth grinding can be caused, for example, by anatomical misalignments or excessively large dental fillings. Excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco or certain medications can also be a cause.
In most cases, however, teeth grinding is stress-related. This does not only refer to acute stress caused by everyday activities. Emotional stress factors, such as conflicts in the social environment or stressful experiences from the past, can also be a cause.
You are not alone: Approximately every 5th adult is affected
Stress is the greatest health threat of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organization. Therefore, it is not surprising that more and more people are affected by teeth grinding.
The jaw as a stress valve – releasing stress with hypnosis
Those who experience a lot of stress should also give their body and mind the opportunity to process this stress. If we don’t find a way to relieve stress in everyday life, the subconscious mind inevitably looks for alternatives. Teeth grinding can be an alternative in this case. During sleep, stress is processed on a subconscious level. The conversations with our clients also frequently show a connection between particularly stressful phases of life and increased symptoms such as tension.
Taking stress to sleep – From the screen straight to bed
We often go straight to bed after using a cell phone or TV. The brain doesn’t get a break, and it can’t process stress. Consequently, we take the stress built up in everyday life with us into sleep.
Treat bruxism – fight symptoms or solve cause
Most sufferers receive a bite splint from their dentist or orthodontist. This protects the teeth from further abrasion due to grinding. However, this does not usually result in the subsiding of bruxism. Because the splint only combats the symptoms. The emotional or stress-based causes often persist. Accordingly, in addition to combating the symptoms, it is helpful to address the causes.
Solve causes and learn relaxation with hypnosis for bruxism
With the help of hypnosis we can promote the disappearance of bruxism in several ways. We work via suggestions that go directly to the subconscious mind, where the nocturnal teeth grinding is triggered. Additionally, we can get to the bottom of the emotional causes. The aim is also to improve the way we deal with stress, since negative stress cannot be avoided entirely.
In addition, using regular self-hypnosis can make it easier to deal with acute stressful situations. Additionally, you can listen to self-hypnosis about teeth grinding before falling asleep to help you get more relaxed sleep. Our self-hypnosis app “HypnoBox” (link https://www.hypnobox.de ) contains special suggestions on teeth grinding.
True to the motto “a healthy mind in a healthy body”, it is also recommended to combine the hypnotic work with stretching exercises or physiotherapy to relieve the jaw.
